Task 1 – Find/ generate/ produce and print a series of images of animals in courtship

Posted in Brief 3 - VISUAL RHETORIC by slkinnane on January 29, 2009

I was either thinking of making a flip book showing two animals courting. But I decided to go with something similar to a comic strip, and just have one image. While I was researching the courtship of animals, I came across a BBC document discussing how some seals have been found attempting to mate with penguins. There not sure why they do this, but one idea is that they are simply practicing for the ‘real thing’, this is called ‘play mating’.

… interesting

Task 6 – Find a series of interesting facts about the destruction of the Berlin Wall

THE GREAT ESCAPES!

DRIVING:

Couriers were aloud to pass through East and West Berlin quite easily and one guy realized that most large vehicles were always searched, looking for people trying to get across. So he bought a 1964 Italian Isetta (a tiny car!), he spent over two months modifying it to hide a person inside. Hoping the guards wouldn’t search such a small car. He managed to get 9 people across, before being caught on his 10th attempt. I’m not sure what happened to him, but all guards were ordered to shoot to kill when people were attempting to get over the wall, so I’m assuming that’s what happened to him.

TUNNELING:

Tunneling was the most popular form of escape. There were actuall gangs, that would promise to get people to the other side, and charge extortionate rates. A tunnel was built between two East German families, 140-yard tunnel, which ran from a bathroom in the East to a basement in the West, more than 100 people managed to be freed. Another one, was actually in a grave, people would go and pretend to put flowers on the grave and then disappear down the hole.

FLYING:

Ok so this is probably the most extreme and original attempt at crossing the wall.

Two East German families worked together making a hot air balloon. two men intended worked in their basement building the balloon out of curtains, bedsheets, and random scraps their wives had stitched together. On September 15, 1979, the Strelzyks and the Wetzels launched their baloon, they had just enough fuel to make it over the wall and land, where they ran to freedom!!! Very cool!

Task 11 – Represent DESIRE with a photograph or video piece (self made or found)

Posted in Brief 3 - VISUAL RHETORIC by slkinnane on January 29, 2009

I was thinking about desire, and generally when the word is used, most of the time desire is represented through sexual desires. But thats really not the only desire we have. So I WISH i played the piano, one was bought for me as a present and its just been sitting there collecting dust for over a year!!! So this is one of my desires.

Task 16 – Make an animation or single image about growth using one colour

Posted in Brief 3 - VISUAL RHETORIC by slkinnane on January 29, 2009

I’ve done two different animations for growth, I’m not very impressed with either one to be honest. Also YouTube have compressed the hell out of them, so they look quite blurry, and they seem to jump quite a bit. The official files will be on CD come hand in though.

Number 1:

Number 2:

Slight issue with number two, as YouTube just keeps saying ‘video is unavailable’. Ill try and sort it out soon!

Task 17 – Present as many images as possible that represent real friendship

Task 18 – Make a short (10 second) video that depicts freshness

Posted in Brief 3 - VISUAL RHETORIC by slkinnane on January 29, 2009

So originally I was just going to have a bunch of clips of clothes spinning around in a washing machine, like this:

But whats interesting about that?!

So instead I’m thinking of something along the lines of this (bear in mind Im only on the concept stages at the mo):

Very quick sketch idea, I think you’ll (kinda) get the idea..

Task 19 – Download an audio file that expresses ‘optimism’ from the internet (max 10 seconds)
